Having been formed over 50 years ago, and performed countless concerts in Berwick and elsewhere, the choir is a well known and respected organisation, not only in musical circles, but in the overall fabric of North Northumberland.
The choir consists of around 40 singers, split into 4 sections, First Tenor, Second Tenor, Baritone and Bass. Our range of music covers many genres, including musical theatre, traditional Scottish and Welsh, and a good selection of all time classics. In fact, nothing is off the agenda. A good example is "The Rose", a song written for a solo female artist, but re-arranged especially for us into a four part male choral piece.
Our season lasts from September through to April and we generally perform around seven concerts in this period. Two of our concerts are in Berwick where our Christmas event is eagerly anticipated, as is our end of season Gala Concert where a number of guest artists add a bit of extra spice to the proceedings.
Our other concerts can be almost anywhere, within reason, and for example in recent seasons we have visited Hexham, Duns, Corbridge, and St Boswells to name a few.
The choir is under the guidance of Robin Cheer, our Musical Director, ably assisted by his wife Isobel, who acts as our accompanist. Robin has written many special arrangements for the choir, resulting in us performing songs not attempted by other Male Voice Choirs.
Other than the two Berwick events, all our concerts are organised as fund raisers for charities. In these cases we are invited to sing by organisations whose charities will benefit significantly from our effort. We are always open to new invitations so if you are interested please call our secretary for more information.
For a number of years now we have had close relationships with choirs from Haan in Germany, and Sarpsborg in Norway, and a number of reciprocal visits have been organised in this time, with our next visit from our Norwegian friends due in 2019.
Aside from the "very serious" matter of singing our members enjoy a number of social activities, not least of which is our passion for golf, and which takes us to some very interesting courses around the district.
As with all organisations, we are faced with the need to raise funds to support our operation, be it to purchase new music, travel to venues, or pay for rehearsal facilities, and to that extent we are very fortunate that we have an incredibly hard working committee, wwho are dedicated to this cause. Additionally we have some very generous supporters and sponsors, without whose help our choir would not exist.
Thank you to you all.
